College of Economics and Management (CEM)of Shanghai Ocean University was founded in 1984. The College developed out of the Department of Fishery Economics and Management of Shanghai Fisheries College, founded in 1984. Since then, to meet the social,economic and disciplinary need of fostering qualified personnel, several economics and management related undergraduate programs have been gradually added to the department’s portfolio of undergraduate programs. The Department of Fishery Economics and Management was renamed “College of Economics and Trade” in 1997, and in October 2006 it was renamed “College of Economics and Management”. Once ShanghaiFisheries University (Shanghai Fisheries College until 1984) was rebranded as “Shanghai Ocean University” in May 2008, the college became the “College of Economics and Management of Shanghai Ocean University”.
The college has four department, including Agriculture and Forestry Economic Management Department,Business Administration Department, Applied Economics Department and Accounting Department.
CEMhas set up an experimental center and three research centers, including the “Strategic Research and Development Center of China Fisheries”, the “Strategic Research and Development Center of Marine Industry” and the “Shanghai Social Survey Center / Shanghai Ocean University Branch”.
CEM establishes a complete education system rangingfrom undergraduate to PhD, offering master's and doctoral degrees in 5 programs: level-2 discipline of fishery economics and management doctoral program, level-1 discipline of agriculture and forestry economics andmanagement master’s program, level-1 discipline of applied economics master’s program, level-2 discipline of fishery economics and management master’s program, and agricultural extension professional master’s program (rural and regional development). CEM offers bachelor’s degrees in 7 programs: agriculture and forestry economics and management, international economies and trade, finance, accounting, marketing, logistics management and business administration (food economies and management direction).
CEM currently has 2,366 undergraduate students and 298 postgraduate students in total. In terms of ethnicity, CEM currently has 235 minority students, accounting for 9.2% of its total student population. And CEM has 30undergraduate international students, accounting for 1.3% of the total numberof students. In addition, 43 international students are enrolled in the postgraduateprograms, accounting for 14.4% of the total number of postgraduate students.
CEM currently has 101 faculty and professional staff, including 75 full-time faculty members, 14 student counselors, two staff in laboratories and ten administrative staff. There are 44 faculty members with senior professional titles, accounting for 60% of the total number of full-time faculty; and 60 faculty members are with doctoral degrees, which is 81% of the total number. One full-time foreign professor has been successfully included into a number of talent programs of Shanghai. 38.67% of the 75 full-time faculty members of CEM have overseas study or visiting experience. At present, there are 6 senior talents with positions as scientistsin the national modern agricultural industrial economy technology system and as Pujiang scholars. At the same time, the college also invited more than 30 well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad to give lectures or conduct cooperative research at CEM.
